Solar energy for the home: This is how worthwhile photovoltaic systems are
Solar energy is the largest source of energy of all – and we can use it. Do you want to generate energy in an environmentally friendly way and be independent of electricity price fluctuations? Then you've come to the right place. We explain everything about the facts about solar energy (advantages and disadvantages) for the house and we talk about the funding opportunities that are available for the purchase of a photovoltaic system.
Photovoltaic systems and their subsidies
In Germany, photovoltaic systems have long since ceased to be a rarity – many roofs are decorated with the large, grayish shimmering panels.
Photovoltaics is a sustainable and environmentally friendly method of converting solar energy into electricity. Photovoltaics refers to the conversion process of light energy into electrical, usable energy. Performance-optimized solar cells with ever better efficiencies ensure that the use of solar energy is also worthwhile in Germany.
Advantages of photovoltaic systems
For a long time, it was assumed that photovoltaic systems were an expensive and inefficient method in the field of renewable energies. However, this view is outdated, thanks to progress and improved plant efficiency. Currently, photovoltaics also achieves a good ranking in relation to other sources of renewable energies. This is also clear from the facts of photovoltaics in Germany.
Facts about photovoltaic systems in Germany (Fraunhofer ISE):[1]
- Photovoltaics is very popular in Germany: in 2020, an addition of approx. 4,900 megawatts was observed.
- In total, there are over two million photovoltaic systems in Germany (as of the end of 2020).
- The use of photovoltaics currently accounts for just over 9 percent of German electricity generation.
- As a result, around 35 million tonnes of greenhouse gases could be avoided in 2020 through the use of photovoltaics in Germany.
The numerous advantages of photovoltaics at a glance:
- Flexibility: Photovoltaic systems can be installed on the roof of a house or in the garden.
- Electricity is produced in an environmentally friendly (emission-free) form.
- The energy source (sun rays) is unlimited and free of charge.
- With an electricity storage system, generated electricity can be used even when the sun is not shining.
- High-quality photovoltaic systems are low-maintenance (because only a few moving parts are installed).
- Photovoltaics means no noise, odor or pollutant nuisance.
- Photovoltaic self-consumption (partially) makes you independent of rising electricity prices.
- Owners of a photovoltaic system receive a guaranteed feed-in tariff for surplus electricity.
What funding opportunities are available for photovoltaics?
If you want to supply yourself with solar power to do something good for yourself and the climate in the long term, you first have to invest in a photovoltaic system. The good thing is that a photovoltaic system pays for itself relatively quickly. In addition, there are still low-interest loans and repayment subsidies within the framework of subsidy programs.
You are also entitled to the feed-in tariff for solar power that you feed into the public grid nationwide. The grid operator reimburses you for the respective rate for your electricity for 20 years.
If you prefer to consume your own electricity, you will need a battery storage system. With funding programmes from the KfW Banking Group, it is possible to finance a PV system at low interest rates. Incidentally, planning, project planning and installation costs are also funded.
Some federal states and municipalities also offer their own funding programs.
